In countries with limited sun exposure, the population need more vitamin D from dietary sources.
Why do we need Vitamin D?
Vitamin D absorbs calcium and promote bone growth. (Deficit can lead to soft bones in children (rickets) and fragile, misshapen bones in adults (osteomalacia).
It helps to regulate the immune system and the neuromuscular system.
It plays a major role in the life cycle of human cells.
Deficiency can lead to breast cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, heart disease, depression, weight gain. Although, there are no studies to prove that lack of vitamin D causes disease -- or that vitamin D supplements would lower risk.
Vitamin D treatment, can be helpful in treating or preventing autism, autoimmune disease, cancer, chronic pain, depression, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, flu, neuromuscular diseases, and osteoporosis.
All of the above are not long termed tested and there are no proven benefits
The only proven benefit of vitamin D is its role in helping calcium build strong bones.
